Sadly, it seems that this moment has been walking towards us for quite some time. I’d always hoped that if asked to reflect on our friendship that I’d have well thought out and poignant thoughts and memories to eloquently express. But what I’ve realised is that to me, it just comes down to these two simple things; Sean was a nice guy, one of the good guys and that he lived his life as he wanted.
I think the number of his friends, most of whom have known him for 30 years or more show this perfectly. People talk of soundtracks of their lives and to me and I know to a lot of people, Sean was a constant at many of the most precious moments we look back upon.
And during all this time I’ve never heard a bad word spoken. Whether he was making a few bob at the turn of a card or slicing his drive so far left, only to see it return to the safety of the fairway. We raise our eyes, shake the head and even give a resigned sigh, but always with a recognition that he was good, very good at most of the things he took on. And the list seems endless, golf, football, tennis, pool, canasta, even connect 4, (who knew right)……. however, give him a flat packed chest of drawers and a spanner, or even a glass of tomato juice, well that was a different story, and usually very funny ………
To me Sean lived his life on his terms. He worked in an industry he absolutely loved. There was barely a sporting event or function that, it seemed to me, he didn’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of or certainly an opinion on. This it has to be said, was often accompanied with a small glass of Chablis.
He loved his family and his friends. That was a given. Generous and warm hearted, another given. But in the last few years to me what did shine through, despite the situation, was that he didn’t complain. Obvious exceptions are when his horses came second, which in fairness seemed to happen a lot, but the words ‘uncomplaining, stoic, strong and brave' I heard often and are all perfectly apt.
To me, for nearly 50 years, he has just been a nice guy and a very good friend.
Rest in peace buddy, I will miss you.
